Memory
Memory holds notes about one person: who they are, how they like to work, and their ongoing goals. Every person has one memory in an organization. Nobody creates it. All bots of that person use the same memory.
A memory is a set of text pages. Bots read and write them in their workspace. Memory needs a workspace.
Who reads and writes
| Bot | What it does with memory |
|---|---|
| Personal bot | Reads and writes the memory of the person it talks to. |
| Company Bot | Reads the memory of the person it talks to, if an Owner or Admin turned it on. It never writes. |
A trigger that runs as a service account has no memory.
Turn memory on
An Owner or Admin turns memory on per bot in the editor, under Capabilities, Memory.
- On a Company Bot, the switch is "Read each person's memory".
- On the Personal bot, the switch is "Remember things about each person". The mode decides who can change it: Always, On by default, or Off by default.
In a new Personal bot chat, a member turns Memory on or off with the toggle in the composer. Memory needs Workspace. It stays fixed once the chat has started.
When a bot changes the memory, the chat shows "Saved to memory" with the change. The note links to Settings, Memory.
Your memory in Chat
Open Settings from the user menu in Chat, then Memory. The tab shows your memory with its size and limit.
- Pages show as Markdown. Open a page to read it.
- Edit a page and save it. If the page changed meanwhile, Chat asks you to reload.
- Delete a page.
AGENTS.mdandINDEX.mdare read-only. - History lists every change with its message, who made it (the bot name, or You), and when.
- Export downloads all pages as one zip.
- Delete all clears the memory with its history after you confirm. This cannot be undone.
What Owners and Admins see
An Owner or Admin never reads the memory of a person. The Console shows numbers only: how many people have a memory, how many pages, and the total size. See Privacy.
Owners and Admins can set two things on the Personal bot, under Capabilities, Memory:
- Limits. The most text one memory can hold. A memory holds 64 KB in total and 16 KB per page by default. You can raise the total up to 1024 KB. A new limit applies to the next change. Nothing is cut.
- Instructions (
AGENTS.md). Every memory starts with this file. Bots read it first.
Memory and Knowledge Bases
A Knowledge Base belongs to the organization and everyone with access reads it. A memory belongs to one person.
